Our Story
Northeastern Group of Companies brings together a family of Michigan businesses working across paint and high-performance coatings, flooring, tile and stone, lighting, window treatments, industrial supply and installation, from nine locations around the state. Between them they cover both ends of a project: the gallon of paint for a spare bedroom, and the epoxy floor system a plant needs back in service by Monday morning.
It started at a paint counter. Northeastern Paint Supply opened in 1959 and grew into the oldest and largest independently-owned decorating retailer in Michigan’s Tri-Cities, serving Saginaw, Bay City, Midland and well beyond. The range widened over the years to take in Benjamin Moore® paints, Hunter Douglas® window treatments, Flooring America® floor coverings and Lighting One™ fixtures, and the reputation our stores still trade on was built there: good products, straight guidance, and staff who will tell you what is actually going to hold up.
In 2021 the business entered a new chapter when Rick Kangas assumed ownership, bringing decades of industrial-supply experience from Norkan Industrial Supply, the Warren, Michigan company he founded and grew. As Norkan integrated with national restoration leader Jon-Don, Rick turned his attention to strengthening Northeastern’s position in the community.
What followed was steady expansion, mostly by taking on established businesses rather than opening branches from scratch. A Frankenmuth showroom joined and trades locally as Northeastern Interiors. Mike’s Custom Tile came in with its own crews, giving the group tile and stone craftsmen on staff instead of a list of subcontractors to call. Most recently North Cromwell Paint in Commerce Township joined, carrying the Benjamin Moore counter south into Oakland County while keeping its own name, its team and its address on Haggerty Road.
That industrial background reshaped what the group can take on. In June 2025 he launched Northeastern Industrial Supply, headquartered in Farmington Hills and serving customers across Michigan and nationwide with floor coatings, concrete restoration products and abatement supplies. Alongside Partners Contracting Group, which installs the epoxy and resinous floor systems those products go into, it means the group now serves facility managers, specifiers and coatings contractors as seriously as it has served homeowners since 1959.
